Acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of Qi (pronounced “chee” and meaning life’s force and substance) flowing through meridians, or pathways. Chinese theory tells us that Qi is what gives us our physical form and keeps us alive. Directing Qi with acupuncture needles, massage, or herbs can not only treat the physical body, but also the mind and spirit.
By inserting filiform (solid) acupuncture needles into acupoints, Qi flow is regulated. This process brings Qi to areas that are deficient and drains areas that are in excess. Thus, acupuncture helps to bring the body back to homeostasis by rebalancing or regulating Qi. When the body is closer to equilibrium, health is restored and the body’s ability to heal itself is increased.
